PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC
INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides information on music, theatre, dance, opera and a variety of other activities which come under the broad heading of the performing arts. Data from Employment in Culture, Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 6273.0) and detailed data from Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2012-13 (cat. no. 4183.0) are the main sources of information about employment and funding for the performing arts.
PERSONS EMPLOYED IN PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC
According to Employment in Culture, Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 6273.0), there were 16,029 persons who were employed under the category of Performing Artists and Music Composers for their main job in 2011. Almost two thirds (64%) were male, and over one third (36%) were female. Musician (Instrumental) was the largest occupation with 6,033 persons (38%) employed. Three quarters (75%) of all Musicians (Instrumental) were male. There were considerably more males than females employed across all occupations excluding Dancer or Choreographer, and Singer. |

EXPENDITURE OF GOVERNMENT FUNDS ON PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC

According to Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2012-13 (cat. no. 4183.0), the Australian Government funding for Performing arts in 2012-13 totalled $142.8m. By comparison, state and territory government funding for Performing arts was $180.2m, with an additional contribution of $270.1m towards Performing arts venues.

In 2012-13 the estimate of Australian Government funded expenditure on Performing arts and music was $142.8m. This was similar to the $142.0m reported in 2011-12. Expenditure on Music theatre and opera gradually increased over the past three survey years whilst expenditure on Drama and Other performing arts decreased during this time. Music performance received the most funding of these selected categories in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13, followed by Drama, and Music theatre and opera.

In 2012-13 the estimate of expenditure on Performing arts and music, funded by state and territory governments, was $180.2m a rise of $12.4m from 2011-12. Expenditure for Music performance increased steadily over this time period, and had the highest expenditure of these selected categories in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13, followed by Other performing arts and Drama. |
